Govt. grants concession to import duty free vehicles |
May 16 (DM) The government has restored to senior executives of the Public Service the concession to import vehicles duty free. The concession initially granted in 1999 was later withdrawn. According to the Trade, Taxes and Investment Policy Circular No.1, senior officers of the Public Service, Parliament, Armed Forces, the UGC and Universities with five years of minimum uninterrupted service are eligible to import a duty free vehicle effective from April 25.

May 16 (Reuters) Sri Lankan shares fell sharply on Wednesday, a 12th straight daily loss, as investors sold stocks given high interest rates and looming new rules curbing credit brokers can extend to customers, dealers said. The Colombo All Share index closed a provisional 2.39 percent lower at 2,525.89 points, a fall of 61.96 points. The index fell 2.92 on Tuesday, and has now fallen around 10 percent in a fortnight.

Oil helps Sri Lanka Q1 trade deficit narrow on year |
May 16 (Reuters) Sri Lanka's first-quarter trade deficit narrowed 15.9 percent from a year eariler to $659.5 million as oil imports fell and garment and textile exports rose, the central bank said on Wednesday. Quarterly imports rose 3.2 percent from a year earlier to $2.377 billion, while exports rose 13 percent to $1.717 billion.
