Rajapaksa indicates problems on autonomous provincial bodies

Jan 23 (PTI) President Mahinda Rajapakse on Tuesday indicated there were problems in accepting amendments on establishing autonomous provincial bodies as part a power devolution package to resolve the Tamil issue, but maintained that a military solution was not possible. Jan 23 (AFP) President signalled a shift in the war against the Tamil Tigers, saying he did not want to push his troops into rebel-held territory to defeat the guerrillas. President defends scrapping cease-fire in civil war with Tamil Tiger rebels

Jan 23 (AP) President defended his internationally criticized decision to scrap a cease-fire deal with the Tamil Tiger rebels, saying Tuesday that his patience wore thin because the insurgents increased attacks on civilians. "I waited for two years to do it. I warned the terrorists not to harm any civilians, but they were doing it," President Mahinda Rajapaksa said at a meeting with journalists. Call for end to Tamil deportations

Jan 23 (SI) Following the renewed violence in Sri Lanka, the Swiss Refugee Council has called on the government to suspend deportations of failed asylum seekers to that country. In a statement, the organisation pointed out that most Sri Lankan asylum seekers in Switzerland were Tamils from the war-torn north and west of the country. Jan 23 (LeN) Colombo Fort Magistrate and Additional District Judge Namal Bandara ordered the CID yesterday (21) to probe the bank accounts of a company belonged to UNP Colombo district MP Ravi Karunanayaka over an alleged misappropriation of Euro 145,000 invested in the company by a foreign national. LTTE 'not responsible' for blasts

Jan 23 (BBC) The President of Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapaksa, has accused the LTTE of trying to divert focus of the security forces by launching attacks in the south. Road project to help poorest districts in Sri Lanka

Jan 23 (AHN) Japan and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) are supporting a pilot project that will combine rural road work and the creation of income-generating opportunities in the poorest districts of Sri Lanka. The project will be funded by a US$2 million grant from the Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction to be managed by ADB. Underwater defence system in place to check Sea Tigers

Jan 23 (Hindu) The Sri Lankan Navy has put in place an “underwater defence system” between Kachchatheevu and Neduntheevu (Delft Island) as part of efforts to curtail the movement of Sea Tigers of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. A communication about laying of sea mines was sent to the Indian Navy.
