Tamil protesters close down Gardiner Expressway |
May 11 (NP) Tamil protesters have made their way onto the Gardiner Expressway tonight, closing six-lanes of traffic in both directions and attracting a massive police contingent. Police put out a city-wide alert, calling for all available officers to the highway at Spadina Road. Some officers were reportedly hurt on the scene. Two weeks ago, thousands of protesters began a five-day demonstration in front of the U.S. Consulate on University Avenue to draw attention to the on-going civil war in Sri Lanka.

3 school wushu officials attacked |

Gang in prostitution racket arrested |
May 11 (CT) A gang of 12 youths has been arrested in connection with a prostitution racket in which around 80 young girls had been raped and sold as prostitutes. Members of the gang had cheated the girls, aged around 16 years, with promises of marriages, taken them to hotels and abused them. Thereafter, the girls had been sold to various hotels. Relatives suspect foul play in woman's soldier's death |

Sri Lanka state revenues shrink 10.6-pct |
May 11 (LBO) Sri Lanka's state revenues have fallen 10.6 percent in the two months to February 2009, amid a slowing economy and collapsing imports while expenses are still rising, the latest official data shows. In the two months to February 2009, total revenues fell to 90.8 billion rupees from 102.8 billion rupees last year, provisional data published by the Central Bank shows. Meanwhile current expenses increased to 163.1 billion rupees, up 27.1 percent from last year's 128.3 billion rupees.

Tamil protesters take to streets |
