Editorial: End of an era? |
Aug 28 (LB) The lifting of Emergency regulations after what has practically been a 28 year long haul of national insecurity, could be termed as the end of an era — a bad one. All predictions are that the current decision spells the definitive end of Emergency rule in this country with no likelihood of Emergency being re-imposed in this post-war era marked by an absence of armed confrontation. In this regard, the national reaction on the whole, though positive, has been sullied by the rather pessimistic

Editorial: Decent election in Colombo a distinct possibility |
Aug 28 (Island) Mr. Milinda Moragoda, the UPFA’s candidate for the Mayor of Colombo, took expensive advertisements last week extolling old-style politics that did not flow from the barrel of a gun. Although Moragoda leads his own political party, whimsically named the Ceylon National Congress after the organization so-named on the Indian model by this country’s original Independence seekers (we will not call them fighters as there was no fight for Independence here as in India), he has joined the SLFP

Editorial: Miles to go towards democracy |
Aug 28 (ST) No doubt, President's announcement this week in Parliament, proposing the lifting of Emergency Regulations under the Public Security Ordinance (1947) will be greeted by (virtually) all in this country with a sigh of relief. It is still not clear when it would be done, but the suggestion alone is good enough news for the moment. Sri Lanka has been governed by Emergency for far too long and people, especially an entire generation, have forgotten what it is like to live in a non-Emergency state.

What is important about Muza’s candidature is that this is the first time in 15 years that a Colombo politician from

Aug 28 (LB) For once, the civil society narrative and the govt narrative on a single issue seems to be one and the same. On the curious but explosive issue of the ‘grease devils’ the general NGO and so-called civil society narrative in the past week has been that this is an organized attempt by certain politically radicalized elements to create a fear psychosis, and blame it on the army, so that the state would be forced to remove military encampments particularly in the Eastern Province in which
