Sri Lanka toughens penalties under new finance company law |
Jan 1 (LBO) A new finance company law that is to be introduced in Sri Lanka will provide for tougher penalties against illegal deposit taking and give regulators wider powers to probe abuses, a statement said. The new law will repeal the existing No 78 finance company act of 1988 which was seen as inadequate to deal with abuses that occurred in recent years where unlicensed deposit taking institutions duped unsuspecting savers with high interest rates.

Sri Lanka gets US food aid for refugees |
Jan 1 (LBO) The United States has given Sri Lanka 5.5 million US dollars worth of emergency food aid to support the return of refugees displaced by the ethnic war in the north, a statement said. The donation by the USAID consisted of 6,740 metric tonnes of wheat flour, pulses and vegetable oil. It will support the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) to meet the essential food needs of 300,000 people displaced by the war which ended in May 2009.

Inmates' food "smuggled out" |

'Fear still prevails' in Jaffna |

Sri Lanka to scrap visa on arrival |
Jan 1 (AFP) Sri Lanka has revived plans to scrap the visa on arrival for foreigners, except Maldivians and Singaporeans, and will launch an on-line visa application system, officials said Friday. The government was to discontinue granting landing permits from October 1, but the scheme was put on hold following objections from the tourism industry. However, the authorities will now implement the system soon, officials said.

Errant drivers on cam |
Jan 1 (NN) Over 300 errant drivers have been captured by the Close Circuit Television (CCTV) camera security network activated in Colombo on Wednesday, the CCTV department said. According to the department most drivers were seen to have violated road rules including instances of passenger buses idling at bus stands in the City, obstructing traffic, jumping the red light, changing lanes in violation of the rules and driving on the pavement.

Jan 1 (BN) Sri Lanka’s inflation rate held near a one-year high in December, adding pressure on the central bank to raise interest rates. Consumer prices in the capital, Colombo, rose 6.9 percent from a year earlier after a 7 percent gain in November, the statistics department said on its website today. The Central Bank of Sri Lanka said Dec. 14 it will take “appropriate” steps to check any “build up of demand pressures.”

Jan 1 (MoD) The Yal Devi train which is now plying between Colombo and Thandikulam via Vavuniya on the peace path to the North is prepared to reach Omanthai from next month. The extension of the rail track beyond Vavuniya and the rebuilding of stations are now in progress incurring a huge expenditure. Accordingly, to reach Kankesanthurai in Jaffna, 159 kilometres of the rail track had to be rebuilt from Vavuniya. It includes 16 railway stations, 12 sub stations and 85 bridges.

Colombo fails to provide relief to Batticaloa flood victims |
Jan 1 (TN) Flood victims in Batticaloa have complained that they have not received proper relief assistance for the last four days, Batticaloa District Parliamentarian P.Selvarasa told media Thursday. Lankan woman jailed for selling passport |
Jan 1 (DM) A Lankan woman, who sold her passport and then reported it lost, was jailed for six months in Singapore after pleading guilty today. The woman, identified as R.S. Maddumage, 38, had sold her passport to another Sri Lankan woman along Serangoon Road for $600. Six days later on Wednesday, she was arrested when she went to report the loss of her passport to the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA). Govt. returns Rs. 5.7bn to Distilleries for SLIC shares |
Jan 1 (Island) The government has returned Rs. 5,715.9 million to a subsidiary of Distilleries Company of Sri Lanka PLC (DCSL) which was due for divesture of Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation Ltd, a stock exchange filing said. DCSL in a statement to the Colombo Stock Exchange yesterday simply said the government has returned the Rs. 5,715,899,526 that was paid by DCSL subsidiary Milford Holdings Pvt.
