Virus that killed chickens have no affect on humans: VRI
Feb 3 (DM) The Veterinary Research Institute (VRI) said today that although the low pathogenic virus that killed a large number of chickens this week had no risk to human health, steps had been taken by the authorities to keep a three kilometre radius surrounding the farm under strict surveillance. After a virus which was suspected to be bird flu spread in the Bingiriya chicken farm earlier this week the Health Ministry had ordered to cull some 5,300 chickens in the farm.

19 children taken ill in Hasalaka
Feb 3 (DM) Several students of Kolongoda Maha Vidyalaya in Hasalaka were taken ill this afternoon at school and admitted to hospital. Teachers said 19 students in the Grade Seven class in the top floor of the building, developed an itch all over their bodies and were rushed to hospital. Detention order on underworld kingpin
Feb 3 (CT) The Colombo Additional Magistrate issued a detention order to a suspected underworld kingpin known as ‘Madush’ who is alleged to have conducted underworld activities while he was in prison. Sri Lanka unexpectedly raises rates as best growth since ’70s spurs credit
Feb 3 (BN) Sri Lanka unexpectedly raised interest rates to contain credit growth and inflation after the island’s economy expanded the most since at least the 1970s following the end of its decades-long civil war. The Central Bank of Sri Lanka raised the reverse repurchase rate to 9 percent from 8.5 percent and the repurchase rate to 7.5 percent from 7 percent. For people my age, communication is largely electronic. The entire country may be moving this way, in fact. IMF concerned over Lanka trade deficit
