Northern Provincial Council: The devolution debate

May 7 (GV) I approach this subject as a political scientist, a former diplomat and briefly a Minister in the Cabinet of the North East Provincial Council. At the overlap of these experiences and roles is what is classifiable as a Realist perspective. As a Realist, I reject outright three myths about devolution which have been around for a long time but have been resuscitated in the post-war period. Mattala as a metaphor for Sri Lanka’s predicament

May 7 (CT) The ongoing saga of the newest white elephant of the Rajapaksa Regime shows no sign of ending. A once coherent and more..

Editorial : Striking while tariffs are high

President Rajapaksa’s May Day promise to grant some relief to electricity consumers does not seem to have had the desired impact on the electorate. more..

Entrenching the Tuition Culture

May 7 (Island) The term rent-seeking is generally applied to politicians and govt officials who seek benefits from the implementation of rules and regulations they administer. But the term is also used of those who benefit from the rent that, as it were, they pay to those in authority. Influencing govt officials, and even govt itself, to grant favours is an easy way of profiting in cultures where transparency is lacking and decision makers have discretion (which is generally a good thing) but more..
