Aug 26 (Island) All govt ministers and MPs voted against an amendment sponsored by JO seeking to permit public servants to contest elections, but Minister W.D.J. Seneviratne abstained. According to the provisions of the Local Govt Elections (Amendment) bill the public servants are required to resign one year prior to contesting a local govt election. Sri Lanka June exports up on ships, tea; imports slow |
Aug 26 (EN) Sri Lanka's exports rose 9.8% in June 2017 from a year earlier, helped by the delivery of two ships to Singapore and higher tea prices, while apparel exports fell. Transport equipment exports rose to US$ 54.3 million in June from US$ 7.6 million a year earlier. Apparel exports fell 7.5% to US$ 375.4 million. Rubber products also rose 15.4% to US$ 73.1 million. Tea exports grew 13% to US$ 138.6 million.

Dengue rages despite all measures to tackle it |
Aug 26 (Island) Epidemiology Unit (EU) revealed that the number of dengue cases recorded so far this year was 88,029, which was higher than that during the whole of last year, despite efforts by EU and Health Ministry to bring the situation under control.
