Much ado about nothing
Feb 5 (ST) My dear Mother Lanka, I am writing to you with mixed feelings as we mark the 75th anniversary of gaining independence from British colonial masters. I think it is more accurate to say that we marked independence instead of saying we celebrated, because there has been precious little to celebrate as a nation lately. We did celebrate yesterday with a ceremony at Galle Face. There is nothing wrong with an event to mark the occasion, but the fact that there was opposition

The future starts today
Feb 5 (ST) And so, amidst the usual grumbling about the wastage of public funds and black flag protests, the country commemorated its 75th year of Independence from 450 years and more of white domination. The event was abridged – truncated as it were, to a minimum. While the country, no doubt, is in the throes of an economic crisis, it is the rolling of the armoured vehicles, the marching of the uniformed infantry battalions, the flypasts and gunboats, that fire imagination of little

Thinking outside the box
Feb 5 (SO) Sri Lankans celebrated the 75th anniversary of their Independence from colonial powers yesterday, with the main ceremony at the Galle Face Green. It would have been inappropriate not to celebrate this landmark event as some quarters suggested, because this is the best time to inculcate a sense of belonging to the Motherland among people belonging to all communities and religious groups in a country yearning for peace and reconciliation. Indeed, as Prez
