While vowing to continue its protests against the
government and it's so-called peace process, the
Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna said that they were not at
all surprised regarding Thursday's incident, when
police attacked their supporters.
The JVP politburo in a statement issued yesterday
said: " the protest rally against the one year
celebrations of the so-called cease-fire agreement,
which took place on Thursday from Peliyagoda, with a
massive crowd of nearly 80,000 was a very peaceful
demonstration, even as it approached Kollupitiya."
"However despite disturbances by police the procession
was able to continue towards Temple Trees. At James
Peiris Mawatha, police fired tear gas and tried to
stop the demonstrators with barb wires. However as the
demonstrators did not give in, the police then fired a
chemical based water at the demonstrators," the
politburo alleged.
They said many demonstrators were injured in the
attack. "The photographer of the Divaina newspaper,
who was also victimised by this attack, was
hospitalised. His digital camera worth Rs. 5 lakhs was
also damaged," the JVP alleged.
While thanking all those who participated at
Thursday's demonstration, the JVP added that all
patriotic Lankan together with them would topple the
UNF government very soon. "The days are numbered for
this traitorous government."
