The European Commission has implemented a project to rehabilitate 55
schools in the five educational zones of the Jaffna peninsula with 11
local contractors carrying out the work.
This comes in the wake of the EC's announcement in September 2002 of a
programme to implement key provisions of the Ceasefire Agreement and to
build confidence in the peace process which includes clearing the school
areas of mines, rehabilitation of buildings and refurbishing them with
basic equipment.
Work started a fortnight ago and will last for four months. The cost of
the work and the equipment amount to 60,000 Euro.
