The government will spend a sum of two billion rupees under an Indian line of credit programme to provide roofing for over 90,00 house in the island. Cadjan and thatched roofs of all houses in the island will be replaced with roofing sheets provided by government free of charge.
3.6 million roofing sheets will be granted to families living in towns, villages and estates. The agreement providing for the supply of roofing sheets was signed at the general treasury recently. Two Indian government owned companies would supply the roofing material. Residents in all electorates will benefit by this gesture. Each family will be given 3 flat sheets and 26 corrugated sheets.
The first consignment of roofing sheets will arrive in the island next month. The entire stock will be received within a period of three months. Roofing sheets will be supplied for 130,000 houses in the island. However, according to the national housing development authority, the houses in need of assistance are only 90,000. The government has also launched a special programme for the storage and for the distribution of roofing sheets by lorries. Divisional Secretaries and Grama Seva officers will be put in charge of the entire procedure, which will be free of political favour.
