Government has drawn up a ten year plan to develop Hambantota. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe, unveiling the plan, said that the Hambantota harbour project would form the axis of this Urban Development programme. The Prime Minister was speaking at the District Development Committee meeting held at the Hambantota Town Hall.
Earlier, Mr. Wickremasinghe toured the Hambantota district where he personally met the people, discussing their problems and issuing instructions on resolving them. Addressing the meeting, he said that the integrated development plan for the district included construction of a power plant, an oil refinery and factories. Government will also look into the possibility of building a breakwater for the convenience of fishermen and take measures to overcome the scarcity of drinking water faced by residents of the district.
Mr. Wickremasinghe also visited the remote villages at Tissamaharama and looked into the welfare of the people there. During meetings with the people, he pledged to solve their housing problem as soon as possible.
