The Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) will decide today their future political strategy, including whether to contest the forthcoming Provincial Council Election solo or under a major political party.
The CWC’s national council and executive council on Saturday bestowed the task to their Leader Arumugam Thondaman to decide the party’s future. “We gathered all opinion at the Saturday meeting, and we will take a decision about the Provincial Council polls today,” CWC MP Muthu Sivalingam, who has also been proposed as the Opposition candidate for the Deputy Speaker post said.
At Saturday’s meeting some council members had proposed that the party ties up with the minority United Peoples Freedom Alliance Government, however several others had voted against this suggestion and proposed that the party instead sticks with the Opposition UNP. “But at the end of the meeting, the Leader was given the task to decide who to support,” sources said.
Mr. Sivalingam also noted that both sides had its good and bad traits. When queried whether the CWC will continue to support the Opposition at the election for the deputy Speaker and Chairman of Committees, he added a decision on this matter will also be taken today evening at a vital party meeting.
Meanwhile sources also attributed to the present ‘independent stand’ taken by the CWC due to several high level rounds of discussions between CWC and Government members. The CWC, which supported the Opposition at the election of the Speaker last month, may even support the Government, if they get their demands which include a vital Ministerial portfolio, sources added.
