JVP Propaganda Secretary Wimal Weerawansa in a letter to President Kumaratunga yesterday claimed that the truth is being emphasised by the shooting of the Army intelligence personal in Batticaloa on 9th and the bomb attack on some security forces on Saturday.

“We saw how the Sri Lanka Army commander has emphasised to the SLMM not to attribute ranks such as colonel, brigadier, etc to LTTE armed men, the Commander also said that this was wrong and has to be stopped. The Army Commander has stated that only the president has powers to attribute ranks to armed forces, which he was not allowed to say during the ‘peace exhibition’ under Ranil Wickremesinghe’s regime,” the letter said.

“All these indicate that the peace efforts of the UPFA Government are different to that of Ranil Wickremesinghe's time. We believe that the strength shown in this respect also should be directed to stop the killings of security forces including members of the intelligence wing,” Weerawansa added.

During the past two years under the United National Front regime, the LTTE was granted maximum strength in the North and East under the guise of peace. And thus, many security personnel and members of the Army’s intelligent wing were killed by the LTTE.

He also questioned how they were to comprehend the LTTE duplicity of action in announcing dates for peace talks, and attacking the government forces at the same time. The JVP also asked the President Chandrika Kumaratunga to take remedial measures in this connection.

Mr. Weerawansa claimed that the LTTE while pretending to be interested in ‘peace’ continued to attack state security forces. Although it was a practice during the Ranil Wickremesinghe's period, to be silent in the face of such attacks and blame the Government forces, it is very clear that this is not the policy of the present government.
