Aug 27 (IL) The country’s pre dominant Muslim political party yesterday vowed to spearhead a campaign in helping all respective political parties reach a consensus on vital matters concerning the peace process, so that peace talks could resume soon.

The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) citing reasons for their latest initiative noted that the Government’s main ally Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) had one opinion on the Interim Self Governing Authority (ISGA), while certain other sections within the Government did not vehemently oppose the ISGA.

“Neither is the SLMC satisfied with the ISGA, because there is no mention what so ever about the Muslim community but that’s why there is something called ‘negotiations’ so that everyone can sit down and add and subtract certain parts of that proposal, so that a favourable out come acceptable by all communities could be reached,” SLMC’s Secretary General M.T. Hasan Ali said.

The SLMC at its last politburo meeting decided to initiate the dialogue with each and every political party. The General Secretary emphasized the need for all parties to sit down and discuss the possibilities of resuming talks soon. “One cannot bluntly say no to any proposal let it be ISGA or otherwise, but should instead sit down and focus on the pros and cons of it and try taking a positive step,” he noted.

“Because, we have to start from somewhere,” Mr. Ali pointed out. He reminded that the JVP has out rightly rejected the ISGA proposal, and but neither are they proposing an alternative.
