The Alliance Government’s main coalition partner will officially kick off their campaign against the proposed Joint Mechanism set up on May Day (Sunday) in Colombo.
The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) is making elaborate plans to bring down many thousands of masses to the BRC Grounds in Colombo from all parts of the country as the first step towards denouncing the mechanism, sources said.
Even though the main campaign will be held in Colombo, similar mass campaigns voicing the people’s disapproval against the structure will be held in nearly 20 districts in the country.
“The main aim of this campaign is to educate them the dangers in the event the mechanism is implemented. The joint mechanism is a danger towards the country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, as it would bestow vast powers to the LTTE, JVP sources pointed out.
Meanwhile the party is also scheduled to meet several High Commissioners and Ambassadors shortly, where they will detail as to why they are opposing the joint mechanism which they reiterate will give ‘extreme powers’ to the Tamil Tiger rebels, and a ‘sure danger’ to the country.
The JVP hierarchy including its leader Somawansa Amarasinghe, General Secretary Tilvin Silva and its Propaganda Secretary Wimal Weerawansa is initially scheduled to meet Indian High Commissioner Nirupama Rao and other Indian diplomats. After which they will meet with other foreign diplomats.
At present two of the Government’s constituents namely the JVP and the National Unity Alliance which is led by Ferial Ashraff have voiced their severe objection towards any plans of a joint mechanism.
