2 arrested health trade unionists granted bail |
Dec 8 (LD) Two health sector trade unionists who were arrested for violating a court order were granted bail yesterday. Maligakanda Magistrate Sunil Abeysinghe released the duo on Rs. 100,000 sureties each and ordered them to support the police investigations and not to threaten the complainants. The Maradana Police arrested the two for intimidating health workers who reported for duty in spite of a strike action called by health sector trade unions, but was prohibited earlier by the Colombo District Court through an injunction.

Dec 8 (LD) The latest clash that broke out between the Karuna and Pillayan Factions in Batticaloa yesterday left two senior loyalists of Karuna Amman dead, sources in the east say. Several shops gutted in fire at Kamburupitiya town |
Dec 8 (LD) A filling station and several shops in the Kamburupitiya town in Matara were gutted in a fire today, reports say. The blaze erupted in the filling station this afternoon, which late spread to the adjoining buildings. Firefighters, joined by Air Force personnel, have been able to prevent the fire from spreading further, according to the reports. The cause of the fire is not known, while the extent of damage is yet to be estimated.

Dec 8 (PTI) Sri Lankan car company Micro Cars Ltd will export locally assembled South Korean Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) SsangYong Kyron to India from next year. "There is a demand for quality SUVs in India," Micro Cars Managing Director Lawrence Perera told reporters here. Dec 8 (LNP) The countrywide blackout experienced between 5.00 a.m. and 6.00 a.m. yesterday was due to a technical problem at the Kelantissa Combined Power Plant, a senior engineer of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) said. He told The Island that it was the first time that the entire country had experienced a blackout due to a technical problem.
