Low turnout in general strike expresses lack of confidence in unions

July 12 (wsws) Tens of thousands of workers joined yesterday’s general strike in Sri Lanka despite a vicious government intimidation campaign. The exact turnout is difficult to gauge as the unions led by the JVP and UNP refused to call mass meetings, rallies or marches to fight for their demands. July 12 (GDI) Sri Lankan premier weight lifter Chinthana Geethal Vidanage qualified to contest in the Olympic Games which is to be held in August in Beijing, China. Sri Lanka state cash flows hit by revenue shortfalls

July 12 (LBO) Finance ministry had to rely on bank overdrafts and additional domestic borrowing to bridge cash gaps in the first five months of 2008 as revenues were below target, a government report said. The finance ministry said the cash deficit forecast for its operations by the end of May was only 4.7 billion rupees but the actual was 23.4 billion rupees.
