CoI denies 'western influence' |
May 26 (BBC) The Commission of Inquiry (CoI) investigating serious human rights violations has denied reports that its investigations are “influenced” by western powers. Leader of the National Freedom Front (NFF), Wimal Weerawansa, MP, has reportedly urged president to dissolve the CoI as it has obtained funds from foreign donors. Several Sinhala newspapers have also questioned the impartiality of the CoI.

Bus fares rice by 27 percent |
May 26 (BBC) The Sri Lanka government and the private bus owners have agreed to raise the fares by 27.2 percent. In a meeting held with Transport minister Dallas Alahapperuma and private bus owners association, it has also agreed to raise the minimum bus fare from Tuesday. The meeting was held after the state-owned oil corporation raised prices for petroleum products by at least twenty-five per cent on Saturday.

'Batticaloa situation is under control for the time being' |
May 26 (AT) Situation in Batticaloa has been brought under control after the release of the two Muslims who were abducted yesterday afternoon by the boys of TMVP, said Minister M.L.A.M Hisbullah. Sri Lanka probing links between 2 diffused bombs |
May 26 (Xinhua) The police said Sunday that they are probing possible links between two bus bombs diffused at two different locations near the capital Colombo on Saturday. Train fare hike unavoidable - Dallas |
May 26 (LD) Transport Minister Dallas Alahapperuma says train fares too, will have to be increased following the hike in diesel prices. He said the rate of the increase would be decided after considering the hike in bus fares. According to the Transport Minister, the Railway Department consumes 30 million litres of diesel every year. Bomb on train in Dehiwala kills 7 |
May 26 (AP) A bomb ripped through a compartment of a packed passenger train during evening rush hour Monday, killing seven people and wounding 62 others near the Sri Lankan capital.
