Nov 20 (SAMN) A severe shortage of essential drugs and equipment has threatened to halt life saving heart surgeries in major hospitals in the country, hospital authorities, doctors and officials said Tuesday. If the main medical equipment and drugs supplier State Pharmaceuticals Corporation (SPC) fails to supply vital drugs and equipment immediately even the National Hospital is likely to suspend heart surgeries, they said.

Paramedics to strike as HM passes the buck |
Nov 20 (Island) Nearly 5,000 paramedics, of 37 Government-run and 400 Provincial Council-run hospitals, will launch a one-day token strike today (20) in protest against the Health Ministry’s inability to resolve some of their core issues, the All Ceylon Health Services Union (ACHSU) said. ACHSU President Gamini Kumarasinghe said pharmacists X-ray technicians, radiography technicians, laboratory technicians and physiotherapists will participate in the strike.
