Australia knocks creative spin aside: Murali

Sept 28 (SMH) Legendary Sri Lankan spinner Muthiah Muralidaran believes Australia's failure to produce a spinner who can perform outrageous tricks since Shane Warne's retirement can be attributed to the perfectionist attitude of the nation's coaches. So-called mystery spinners are all the rage at the World Twenty20, where Sri Lanka's Ajantha Mendis kicked off the event by claiming 6-8, the best figures in the format's international history. Saeed Ajmal, the Pakistan off-spinner, makes a more..

T20 AUS v IND: Watson and Warner destroy India

Sept 28 (CI) Australia's captain George Bailey doesn't think his side is over-dependent on Shane Watson. Who'd be able to tell? Watson has hardly given any of his team-mates a chance so far in this tournament, and that continued in Australia's first Super Eights match as they crushed India by nine wickets in Colombo. To be fair, David Warner was also outstanding and Pat Cummins played a key role with the ball. But Watson was again the stand-out performer, more..

Acting and directing plays since his student days at the Peradeniya University, Macintyre has been into theatre for well over 50 years. As is the case for most creative artistes of Sri Lanka, Macintyre had to sideline his passion more..

Groucho Marx, Lanka’s militarists and Albert Einstein

Sept 29 (SL) Groucho Marx an outstanding comedian for about four decades of the last Century described ‘Military Intelligence’ as a ‘contradiction in terms’ Groucho’s perception can be appreciated. In his time the gentlemen in khaki were not considered to be blessed with much intelligence. And those with intelligence – ‘nerds’ as we call them now – did not want to get into khaki. Times have changed. This is the age of the ‘Rana Viru’ and those in military intelligence are considered the ‘top of the more..

How Sri Lanka could move into a complex production system

Sept 29 (CT) A reader of the previous week’s My View titled “SL’s future: Convert the simple economy into a high-tech based complex economy” has taken up an important issue with this writer via email. Instead, according to him, Sri Lanka has traders who are more..

19th Amendment: Impunity for VIP brats?

Sept 29 (CT) Someone who was at the wrong place at the wrong time was assaulted. Now let’s assume, as has been alleged, that Major Chandana Pradeep was not on duty at that moment. Let us assume that even though he was an Army Intelligence Officer who could have been carrying out duty-work in off-duty time due to an important development related to the particular brief, he was not doing anything of the sort. more..

What retired planters can do about the parlous state of our country

Sept 29 (CT) When Malcolm Dias, asked me to address you today, I told him he might regret having ever made the request! That said, let me say at the outset that if you are expecting some truly inflammatory rhetoric that will bring a convoy of white vans to this place even before you reach your dessert, I hope you are going to be disappointed! Let me start with something totally unrelated to what is going to be the essence of what I have to say more..

The skeletons in all our cupboards

Sept 29 (CT) To remember is a choice, a hard one. To remember is to hold in check those who wish to return to the horrors of the past. To not revisit policies that led to past horrors is to give Sri Lanka a greater chance of healing, and reconciliation. And yet, remembering is never easy, defined or settled. Why for example should a populist govt, such as we have today in Sri Lanka, seek to remember dead already forgotten by most of its core constituency? Electoral benefits accrue more..

Editorial: Kudankulam and people's safety

Sept 29 (Island) India has issued two important media statements for the consumption of Sri Lankans during the last couple of days. One dismisses, as baseless, reports that India keeps some of its missiles aimed at strategic locations in Sri Lanka. Such reports are floated from time to time by vested interests and a section of the Sri Lankan media unfortunately falls for them hook, line and sinker. True, Indo-Sri Lanka relations have suffered a serious setback owing to India's diplomatic volte-face in Geneva early this year. more..

Let’s not allow the Pearl of Great Price to be destroyed

Sept 29 (Island) For centuries, Sri Lanka has placed great value on education. Buddhist Pirivena educators, theosophists, Hindu reformers, Christian missionaries and Muslim modernists have over the years helped to build institutions of great learning. Compulsory education was introduced in 1911 but it became effective only after the wide education reforms in the mid 1940s. The state provided free education from primary to tertiary levels and also established quality secondary schools in all the districts of the country more..

Early signs encouraging for Dananjaya

Sept 29 (CI) Following the nerve-fraying finish and the drama of the final half hour of Sri Lanka's Super Eights encounter with New Zealand, Akila Dananjaya's four overs in New Zealand's innings seems an age ago. It was a quiet night for bowlers in general, but Dananjaya's performance deserves to be highlighted. It was not just that he was steady despite his inexperience, and that he kept his nerve against destructive Twenty20 batsmen intent on unsettling him, more..
