Questions the public must ask in Sri Lanka

Apr 6 (GV) In the few days following the UNHRC meetings in Geneva, we have witnessed several act of blatant criminality by mobs on people and property- in greater Colombo, Killinochchi and elsewhere. A common factor has been the passivity of the Police. They have looked the other way (reminiscent of July ’83) and suppressed video evidence of the culprits responsible for such violence. He has been asked to assist a committee that will draft a new law to prohibit distortion of religious teachings in the country. The Patrick I knew

Apr 6 (CT) It is with sadness that every musician received the news of the demise of one of the most genial of personalities in the showbiz world, Patrick Denipitiya. Our moment of destiny

Apr 6 (CT) I think every generation faces its own particular challenges; but the greatest and most defining ones are those of morality and courage. That moment, if missed, condemns that generation — and often many that follow — to a world far more unpleasant and evil than we would wish it to be. For many in the free world of the late 1930s, that moment came with the invasion of Poland and the bombing of Pearl Harbour. It was a moment when my grandfather’s generation more..

Editorial: Counting the dead belatedly

Apr 6 (Island) Sri Lankans are very liberal with numbers. In a country which is home to about twenty million humans, they claim, there are three hundred and thirty three million deities—this thun kotiyak devivaru. Hyperbole seems to be a genetic factor in them and hence their adeptness at plucking figures out of the air, especially in the aftermath of disasters, natural or man-made. In none is this trait more manifest than in politicians whose forte is to blow things out of proportion to suit their more..

Towards the collapse of history

There were no courts that came crashing or crumbling down. One only heard the minister of justice talk of his political problems. That is another termite at work – the political termite. It is very active these days. It won’t be long before the dreams of many politicians are shattered. Alright, we will have to wait for that, more..

It didn’t really live up to the expectations but on the whole was an ‘alright’ line-up of designers. The first two designers’ more..
