PC candidate’s firecrackers injure two |
Aug 30 (Island) Two women passengers were injured when firecrackers, thrown by supporters of a provincial council candidate, fell into a moving bus at Nawalapitiya yesterday. The victims were admitted to the Nawalapitiya and Gampola hospitals. Party supporters had been lighting fire crackers to welcome the candidate campaigning in the town when the accident happened. Bangladesh looks at monk’s death |
Aug 30 (CG) Bangladesh is to gather information into the death of a Bangladeshi Buddhist monk in Sri Lanka after he was reportedly assaulted in Rajagiriya. Train service to K’chchi to resume after 23 years |
Aug 30 (Island) Sri Lanka Railways would officially recommence the train service on the Northern line, up to Kilinochchi, after a lapse of 23 years, on Sept 14. Currently, the trains operate only up to Omanthai, 10 km north of Vavuniya. The Northern Line, from Vavuniya to Kankesanthurai, was destroyed by the Tiger terrorists during the three-decade-long war and the train service to Kilinochchi came to a halt in July 1990.

Over 100 kg heroin seized in Sri Lanka |
Aug 30 (Xinhua) At least 100 kg of heroin was seized from a container truck which had arrived in Sri Lanka from Pakistan. Customs Director Mali Piyasena said that the containers were seized on suspicion and it was sent to a container yard to be checked. The documentation on the container indicates that it contained tins with grease. However when the tins were checked customs officers found at least 100 kg of heroin inside.
