Preparing for Presidency |
May 9 (CT) There is a real possibility that Ranil Wickremesinghe might win the 2020 presidential elections. After all, he survived the Millennium City fiasco and the Battalanda case and the ill-conceived 2002 Cease Fire Agreement to emerge as the champion of Good Governance in 2015. These would have sent another to political oblivion, but not Wickremesinghe. He survives simply because his opponents do not want him gone. In 2015, he had to ride on the coattails of Maithripala Sirisena.

The Maha Sangha or the communities of Buddhist monks from the Maha Nayakes to the Samaneras have taken to the streets to decry the proposal. Much of the criticism is focused not on the contents or the substance of the proposal but on the conduct of the proposer. To this alliance of holy men the proposer –the JVP- is a foreign agent.

Editorial: Promises, games and tricks |
May 9 (Island) President Sirisena has shown his hand at last; he says he will not retire in 2020. Nobody expected him to do so. When he declared, upon being inaugurated on Jan. 09, 2015, that he would not seek a second term, it was obvious that he did not mean what he said. He is a politician! Machiavelli famously said, "The promise given was a necessity of the past: the word broken is a necessity of the present." Prez Sirisena has said he has a lot more to do for the country before retiring.
