Will Ranil Short-Circuit Sajith? |
Aug 16 (CT) The run-up to the Presidential Election due shortly is throwing up a range of possibilities some of which are cause for concern. Irrespective of who wins or loses, the prospects for the country are bleak. The country will limp along as it has done for 71 years since independence from one catastrophe to another. Due to a multitude of reasons, big power politics will not allow the country to be a classic basket case. None of our leaders of the past or for that matter

State of the race |
Aug 16 (CT) Sri Lankans will face a presidential election in about four months. However, no major political party was in a hurry to announce its candidate for the race. Now, the first name is out. On August 11, 2019, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) announced that it is fielding Gotabaya Rajapaksa as its presidential candidate. Although it was apparent that Gotabaya will be the party’s nominee, unnecessary suspense was built up until the party’s national convention.

Election promises and what must be changed |
Aug 16 (DM) We have read much about what potential election candidates and Pohottuwa party’s Gotabaya Rajapaksa have had to say these days. Now its the turn for these prez hopefuls to read the minds of voters and check out their needs. Given that SL is debt-ridden, country’s citizens are concerned about lawmakers spending lavishly on elections propaganda. Right now we see many posters bearing the picture of Gotabaya Rajapaksa decorating the walls of Colombo and the suburbs after SLPP announced its election candidate.

It is still uncertain whether he will receive nomination with the blessing of the party leadership. Let alone, the Badulla rally virtually turned out to be his maiden public event in view of the presidential elections. And, he outlined his policies in a broader frame at the event. Interesting to note here is that he is advocating

Zoo to fly in new animals |
Aug 16 (SO) In our childhood, we listened to the story of a tortoise flying with the help of two cranes. How can a tortoise fly?, we kept asking mother. She did not know how to answer our questions. Yet, she did not stop telling us stories and we found many other animals who cannot fly in the real world but in her stories they flew. Animals do fly from one country to another quite often. Instead of cranes and sticks, now they get on board and fly by way of an aircraft.

Editorial: Follow money trail |
Aug 16 (Island) Some polls monitors have called for a ceiling on election campaign expenditure. This, we hear in the run-up to elections like koha’s mating call during the Avurudu season. But nothing happens thereafter and the issue is forgotten. Politicians and moneybags carry on regardless, and corruption thrives. The Election Commission (EC) takes pride in the fact that a wealthy candidate who spent more than Rs. 40 million at the last local govt polls finds himself in hot water. H

For Them, by Them, all for Them; and others vying |
Aug 16 (Island) Democracy is a system of govt by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives. That is the form of govt we in SL have. It was truly thus soon after we gained independence from British rule in 1948. We oldies remember how candidates paid for their elections, some with assets, but those without, borrowing or launched forward by pooled money. Once in govt they did what they had to do; visit their electorates,

Ajaz Patel's five-for keeps New Zealand in the hunt |
Aug 16 (CI) Ajaz Patel hasn't had the bowling opportunities he'd like when back home, but when he's been called upon overseas since his debut late last year, he's generally been a machine that delivers sharp-spinning deliveries mixed with dollops of drift and subtle changes in lengths. On surfaces like in Galle that offer bite, he can be more than a handful, as SL found out on Thursday. His second Test five-for triggered a slide, SL slipping from a comfortable 143 for 2 to 227 for 7 at stumps.

Ajaz Patel follows the Herathian template to turn Galle Test |
Aug 16 (CI) Much like the Sri Lanka seam bowler, the New Zealand spinner is a second-class citizen. If you're not bowling with the seam upright and at at least 120kph, the place is practically designed to make you feel insecure. Early in the summer, pitches can be virtually indistinguishable from the outfield. In the stereotype of New Zealand, cows and sheep in neighbouring paddocks line up at edge of grounds and bleat longingly at the unused grazing opportunity that is the pitch block.
