NCDs account for 83% of deaths
Nov 7 (CT) Director of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) Unit, Dr. Vindya Kumarapeli revealed that 83% of the annual deaths in the country were due to NCDs. Addressing the media, Dr. Kumarapeli said that an average of 130,000 deaths occurred in the country annually. 83% of them were due to NCDs. She said that of that number, 34% was due to cardio vascular diseases, 14% due to cancer, 9% due to diabetes, and 8% as a result of contracting chronic respiratory diseases.

SriLankan Airlines 1H group loss reduced to US$ 76mn
Nov 8 (Island) SriLankan Airline's financial performance for the six months ended 30th Sept 2019 showed an upward trend by reducing its losses by more than 50%, with a loss of USD 19 million before interest and withholding tax against a loss of USD 39 million for the same period in the previous year, SriLankan Airlines said. After interest and withholding tax, the half yearly group loss was USD 76 million, a USD 10 million improvement over the USD 86 million loss in the previous year.

Biz confidence climbs to 8-month high
Nov 8 (FT) The LMD-Nielsen Business Confidence Index (BCI) recorded an increase of 12 basis points to register 102 in October. The leading business magazine notes that this represents the highest the index has been since February. 2 gas shipments arrive tomorrow & Monday
Nov 8 (DM) The Litro Gas Lanka Company yesterday said they had received 3,600 metric tons of gas shipment yesterday and another two shipments are due on Saturday and Monday to meet the gas shortage. A Litro gas company senior official said 3,800 metric tonnes and 2,500 metric tons of gas shipments will arrive on Saturday and Monday.
