Oct 20 (AD) Dutch Foreign Affairs Minister Stef Blok says many democracies in the world have commended Sri Lanka for being able to maintain the free and democratic electoral system despite challenges. Mr. Blok, who is in Sri Lanka for a two-day official visit, stated this when he called on Prez Sirisena yesterday. Staggering 301,989 persons over 14 years use cannabis
Oct 20 (CT) National Anti Drug Front (NADF) Convener, Chathura Liyanarachchi made a startling revelation regarding drug users in the country, he said, 75% of drug users were youth and that they comprised at least 90% of Sri Lanka's labour force. Questions over SLLRDC’s move to buy sea sand dredger costing Rs. 6.5bn
Oct 20 (ST) Sri Lanka Land Reclamation and Development Corporation (SLLRDC) is to sink billions of rupees into buying a trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD)–the same type of vessel that was used by the builders of Colombo Port City—to dredge sea sand for the local construction industry. Police officer under probe over hit-and-run accident
Oct 21 (ST) A senior police officer attached to Police hospital is under investigation for a hit-and-run accident in the Katugastota area. It is alleged that the police officer had sped away in his car after it collided with a three-wheeler on Aug 18 on the Madawala Road. Due to the collision, the rim cup of the police vehicle had come off. Three-wheeler driver had gone to the Katugastota police station, taking the rim cup with him to lodge a complaint.
