New hospital in Trincomalee |
July 13 (GDI) A modern hospital complex was commissioned in Trincomalee. The complex constructed at a cost of Rs. 200 million was commissioned at the Government Hospital in Nilaweli, Trincomalee. The construction of the hospital complex which included an administration unit as well, was in line with President Mahinda Rajapaksa's Jathika Saviya and Gama Neguma programmes.

2 LTTE cadres surrender; Civilian killed in LTTE claymore attack |
July 13 (GDI) Two more cadres of the LTTE have surrendered to the Army yesterday. As the security forces have established full control of the East, some more LTTE cadres are expected to leave the organization. The Media Centre for National Security said that two LTTE cadres surrendered to the Army Exit/Entry point at Uylankulam. They had complained that they deserted from the LTTE as they had been severely punished and harassed.

July 13 (LNP) Fresh tuna fetches around 8,000 rupees per kilogram in Japan and the Ceylon Fisheries Corporation has earned 14.4 billion rupees by exporting 18,646 tons of tuna to that country in 2006, Secretary to the Ministry Of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, G. Piyasena said. He said the Ministry has put forward a ten-year plan and set a target to air freight 28,000 Metric tons of tuna annually by 2008.

July 13 (DM) A hair relic of the Buddha will be brought to Sri Lanka from the Chittagong Buddhist Temple, Bangladesh on July 19, the Daily Mirror learns. The sacred relic is to be kept at Senanayake Aramaya of Madampe, where previously brought hair relics of the Buddha from Chittagong have also been enshrined. The relic has been offered to Senanayake Aramaya on a request made by its chief patron Keerthi Senanayake and philanthropist Sammodha Caldera.

July 14 (Reuters) Sri Lanka's rupee ended flat in thin trade on Friday, languishing at an all-time closing low hit the day before, while shares weakened after a new threat of attacks on economic targets by Tamil Tiger rebels.
