Transport Minister recommends bus fare reduction |
July 25 (GDI) Transport Minister Dullas Alahapperuma has directed fare reduction to a number of routes from yesterday. Under the Ministers guidance, Sri Lanka Central Transport Board (SLCTB} will implement the fare reduction that was included in a formula drawn up under the scheme to eliminate bus fare anomalies. This new bus fare formula has been introduced by the National Transport Commission. It will rectify most of the anomalies applying in certain route sections.

Troops find digital camera in Thoppigala |
July 25 (PISL) Security forces, in a clearing operation at Thoppigala, recovered a digital camera left behind by the fleeing LTTE cadres. They were able to gather a wealth of information through this find, Military sources said yesterday. However, the source was reluctant to reveal what information had been gathered from the film, but said it contained photographs of 73 people held prisoner by the LTTE in Thoppigala. The pictures revealed that the prisoners had been tortured.

Sri Lanka GDP to grow 7-8 pct a year to 2010-cenbank |
July 25 (Reuters) Sri Lanka's central bank said on Wednesday the island's economy was on track to expand between 7.0-8.0 percent annually through 2010, citing a planned multi-billion-dollar infrastructure project drive. The bank also forecast the country's budget deficit would narrow to 7.6 percent of GDP in 2007 from 8.4 percent in 2006. Mervyn Silva pleads guilty to cheque fraud |
July 25 (LNP) Labour Minister Mervyn Silva who yesterday pleaded guilty to a charge of misappropriation of a cheque to the value of Rs. 70,000 was released by Colombo High Court after being ordered to pay Rs. 2500 as state costs. Mr. Silva who appeared through a motion filed by his attorney pleaded guilty to the amended indictment of misappropriation with a dishonoured cheque worth Rs. 70,000.

Resumption of night flights from BIA delayed |
July 25 (LNP) Night air travel to and from Sri Lanka will have to wait at least another seven weeks as International Air Lines have still not rescheduled their night flights from Katunayake International Air Port. Night flights from the BIA were suspended on May 9 following an abortive LTTE aerial attack on the Katunayake air base adjoining the airport. A spokesman from SriLankan Airlines told the Daily Mirror that International air lines had to reschedule their night flights covering Sri Lanka again.

Forces need another 30,000 men |
July 25 (LNP) Defence Spokesman, Minister Keheliya Rambukwela yesterday said that the Security Forces need another 30,000 personnel to execute their future plans and maintain the gains achieved in the East. `As we need trained personnel for the purpose, military personnel serving in some of the detachments and policemen from Colombo and suburbs will be transferred to the East until recruits are trained he said. `There is a shortage of numbers and this has to be addressed soon,` he said.

SL among UN hunger hot spots |
July 25 (SAMN) Sri Lanka has been listed among countries where there exists either extreme hunger or a threat of hunger developing in some part of the country, according to a UN World Food Program (WFP) report. Apart from Sri Lanka the other countries in the list are Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Chad, Sudan, Congo, the occupied Palestinian territories, Zimbabwe and Kenya. According to the UN, people living in ‘Hunger's Global Hotspots’ are not aware of what tomorrow will bring them and they often have to rely on WFP for their next meals.

EU to send US$21 million in aid to help victims of Sri Lanka civil war |
July 25 (AP) The European Union said Wednesday it would send €15 million (US$21 million) in humanitarian aid to victims of the conflict in Sri Lanka, including refugees who have fled the fighting and now live in India's southern state of Tamil Nadu. EU Development Aid Commissioner Louis Michel said the European Commission was "extremely worried by the increase in violence" in Sri Lanka, which has put thousands of civilians and international aid workers at risk.

Sri Lanka liberalizes foreign exchange rules |
July 26 (LBO) Sri Lanka has relaxed foreign currency transactions in the country by allowing money changers to sell as well as buy forex and also relaxed rules on operating non-resident foreign currency accounts. The Central Bank, which regulates the industry, said in a public notice that nine money changers out of 62 authorized licensees have been allowed to sell foreign exchange up to 1000 dollars per customer from this month.

July 26 (LBO) Nestlé’s Sri Lanka unit has reported a fall in profit in the first half of 2007 as government price controls hit its milk powder distribution business, the company said Thursday. Nestlé Lanka PLC profit after tax fell 7.8 percent to 640 million rupees in the six-month period from January to June 2007 compared with the same 2006 period. Turnover grew 11.7 percent to 7.9 billion rupees.

July 26 (Reuters) Sri Lanka's top mobile operator, Dialog Telekom , a unit of Telekom Malaysia , posted a 1 percent fall in first-half net profit on Thursday citing losses by its satellite TV business and the impact of civil war. January-June group net profit slipped to 4.87 billion rupees ($43.5 million) from 4.93 billion rupees during the same period a year earlier -- slowing sharply from full-year 2006 growth of 44 percent. Overall group revenue rose 25 percent to 15.36 billion rupees.
