Total overhaul of power plant to cost CEB Rs. 745 mn
Sept 27 (Island) Power and Energy Ministry has given the green light to the CEB to repair the 115 MW open cycle gas turbine, known as the Fiat Avio plant GT7, at the Kelanitissa power station. The repair will cost around Rs. 745 million. CEB engineers yesterday said that Power and Energy Ministry took the correct decision by taking minimum work out of it due to the shortage of water in the reservoirs. Sri Lanka to probe explosion in ammunition store
Sept 28 (PTI) Sri Lankan military has ordered probe into explosion at an ammunition store that killed a soldier and caused injuries to two others, officials said here Tuesday. Brigadier Nihal Hapuarachchi, the military spokesman said the body of the soldier was discovered this morning during a search. A five member committee has been appointed to probe the matter. The explosion rocked the military dump at Weerawila in the southern town of Tissamaharama yesterday.

Sept 28 (Reuters) Stock market inched up on Tuesday in thin trading volumes led by financials, but a liquidity shortage due to a lack of credit weighed on the market. The main share index closed 0.02 percent or 1.66 points firmer at 6,737.68. It is still Asia's best performer with a return of 1.53 percent on the year. Sri Lankan natives saved from human traffickers
Sept 28 (ENS) Ernakulam Rural district police chief Harshita Attaluri in a press release stated that the police saved 32 Sri Lankan nationals. They were trying to leave for Australia without proper documents. Nine people who made arrangements to escape were nabbed by police led by Moovattupuzha DySP Tomy Sebastian and Kothamangalam CI K P Jose on Sunday. The police arrested five Sri Lankans for cheating the refugees and four people of Kothamangalam for arranging houses for the refugees.

Body found at explosion site
Sept 28 (DM) A charred body of a soldier was found by the army this morning from the explosion site inside the Weerawila Army Camp where an ammunition dump exploded on Monday, Military Spokesman Brigadier Nihal Hapuarchchi said. Sept 28 (LBO) Sri Lanka's exports rose 9.4 percent to 958 million US dollars in July 2011 from a year ago although earnings from tea, its main agricultural export fell, the central bank said. Cases of sexual abuse in Jaffna on the increase: GA

'Residents ignore garbage system'
Sept 28 (GPI) Lionel, 43, has been working for more than 11 years in Kotikawatta-Mulleriyawa, a village council in Colombo district. He is a health laborer, otherwise known as someone who collects garbage. Rabies to be wiped out by 2016
Sept 28 (LP) The Health Ministry has directed all the Provincial Medical Directors to launch awareness programmes at Medical Health Officers level to eradicate Rabies from Sri Lanka by 2016. The dog population was estimated at 3 million in Sri Lanka and nearly 2000 dog bits are reported in a day. The govt spent over Rs.500 million annually to treat dog bite victims, the Rabies Eradication programme. 32 deaths have been reported due to rabies over the past six months of this year.

NTPC, CEB incorporate JV in Sri Lanka
Sept 28 (PTI) NTPC along with CEB has incorporated 'Trincomalee Power Company', a joint venture that would set up a 500 MW coal-based power plant in Sri Lanka. In a regulatory filing, NTPC said the joint venture entity was incorporated on September 26. "The joint venture Company shall set up 2x250 MW coal-based power project in Trincomalee Region in Sri Lanka," it added. An innocent man detained for three years without being charged
Sept 28 (LG) Mr. Rasaratnam Jegatheeswaran (33) of Thiriketheeshwaram in Mannar District is currently detained in Welikada Prison in Colombo.
