Cement production, imports sharply up |
Aug 22 (EN) Cement production rose 19.7 metric tonnes to 1.041 million tonnes in the first five months of 2016 and imports rose 18.4% to 1.888 million metric tonnes, which is usually indicative of a construction sector recovery. Up to May 2016, production and imports rose by 465,000 tonnes, up 18.9% from a year earlier to 2,928 million tonnes. In the first five month of 2015, domestic production and imports rose only 4.4% from a year earlier or 103,000 tonnes to 2.463 million tonnes.

Sri Lanka nation-wide inflation decelerates to 5.8% in July 2016 |
Aug 22 (EN) Sri Lanka's rate of inflation, as measured by National Consumer Price Index (NCPI), decelerated to 5.8% in July from 6.4% in June on year-on-year basis. “Both Food and Non-food categories contributed towards the year-on-year inflation in July 2016,” Department of Census & Statistics said. The change in the NCPI measured on an annual average basis increased to 3.4% in July 2016 from 3.1% in June 2016. It was the first time in 6 months that the NCPI slowed down.
