Fish survey around Sri Lanka after 38 years |
Sept 2 (Island) Minister of Fisheries Mahinda Amaraweera said the ministry would carry out a fish survey in Sri Lankan waters from January with the help of Norway after 38 years. He said it would take 18 months to complete the survey and the total cost of which would be borne by Norway. "A fish survey was last carried out in 1978 in Sri Lankan waters and it was also facilitated by Norway," he said.

Ban Ki-moon tells Sri Lanka to reduce military in North, East |
Sept 2 (CG) UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, on Friday, urged the Govt to release civilian land held by the military. Ban Ki-moon, who is on the final leg of his visit to Sri Lanka, urged Sri Lanka to speed up the return of land so that the remaining communities of displaced people can return home. Sept 2 (Reuters) Sri Lankan shares ended steady on Friday, with falls in hotels and travel companies offsetting gains in diversified holdings and health care stocks, while foreign buying helped boost turnover. Colombo stock index ended 0.02% weaker at 6,539.09 and posted its second straight weekly loss, of 0.2%. Foreign investors, who have been net sellers of shares to the tune of 2.98 billion rupees ($20.48 million) so far this year, bought a net 612.9 million rupees worth of shares.

Immigration fraudster from SL jailed in UK |
Sept 2 (GWL) An immigration fraudster living in Hounslow has been jailed after he was caught using a fake passport to apply for a job. Mohamed Buruhan came to the UK from Sri Lanka and his student visa had expired when he was caught using the false Italian ID. The 29-year-old was arrested in June when his home in Staines Road, Hounslow, was searched and the fake passport was found.
