June 11 (CT) The ruling Conservative Party headed by Premier Theresa May has fallen short by eight seats to have an absolute majority in the 650 seat House of Commons by winning only 318 seats at Thursday's election in UK. Arch rivals Labour came second; winning 262 seats. Reports say that May is having talks with the Northern Ireland based conservative Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) which won 10 seats to form a coalition govt. Another Rs 38 B lost on free vehicle permits |
June 11 (CT) The revenue lost on allowing concessionary vehicle permit schemes for public servants amounted to Rs 38.2 billion in 2016, Finance Ministry statistics show. According to the Finance Ministry Annual Report 2016, the revenue forgone due to concessionary vehicle permits was reduced in 2016, as it declined to Rs 38 billion from Rs 40 billion in 2015. The revenue forgone under concessionary vehicle permits amounts to two per cent of the total tax revenue raised in 2016.

CBSL’s reserves bleed $290M for debt servicing |
June 11 (CT) Central Bank of Sri Lanka's (CBSL's) foreign reserves were left poorer by US$ 290.43 million (Rs 44,290.56 million) on Friday (9) to meet a foreign debt servicing commitment of the Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL), a study of the CBSL's press releases on the daily open market operations (OMO) showed. Such commitments are met from CBSL's foreign reserves and not from the interbank foreign exchange (FX) market so as to prevent depreciative pressure on the rupee.
