Moral dilemma of a nation

Jun 30 (SO) The nation came out of a bloody period of continuous warfare a decade ago, but all that bloodshed, all that brave energy, has not succeeded in resolving the causes of the war. Those causes, today, still remain dangerous embers of socio-cultural conflict that could flame up again any time – as it did momentarily and tragically on April 21, Easter Sunday. But it is human to err and, as the community of dwellers on this sceptred isle, we must confront our challenges, new and old, more..

Price of sovereignty

Jun 30 (CT) Clinton era Secretary of State Madeleine Albright once said, “We will behave multilaterally when we can, and unilaterally when we must.” This sums up the United States’ arm-twist diplomacy in a nutshell, particularly when it comes to dealing with nations that are dependent on the West for reasons purely economic. The controversial Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA), which is shrouded in mystery for the most part – apart from the leaked Confidential Diplomatic Note more..

Let the games begin: Backstabbing, under-cutting and bad-mouthing to the fore

Jun 30 (ST) My dear Bond Ravi, I thought I must write to you because you are making many statements these days about what type of person the Green party’s next presidential candidate should be – even though you have not said who it would be. That is a strange way of trying to win the next big election, which is due in a few months. It is also strange because none of the other major parties have announced their candidates yet – and they have their own problems. more..

Will hanging change the status quo?

Jun 30 (ST) When President Maithripala Sirisena announced triumphantly to journalists this week that he has already signed the death warrants of four prisoners on death row, the reactions were multifaceted. The most predictable of them came from Western do-gooders who, despite repeatedly neglecting to clear their own backyards, trot out formulaic strictures to the rest of the world at the drop of a hat. In order to bear upon the SL President to halt the intended executions, more..

Lucky crooks

Jun 30 (Island) Who says our police are inefficient? An airman has been arrested, in Hingurakkgoda, over a fraud, according to a media report. He used someone else’s credit card to go on a shopping spree only to land himself in trouble. The card owner, upon receiving a massive bill, made a complaint to the police, who traced the suspect, with the help of CCTV cameras in the shops he had visited. UNP still living in the 1980s

Jun 30 (Island) A statement made by UNP Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa, last week, highlighted more than ever what was wrong with the present-day UNP. It also highlighted a point of convergence in outlook and attitude between the leader and the deputy leader of that party. What Sajith Premadasa said was that the Rajapaksa govt had tweaked the poverty figures of the country in such a way that SL was made to look like a country that had eliminated poverty and that had led to this country more..

Sri Lanka: Heading towards becoming a failed state

Jun 30 (DM) Sri Lanka is in great danger of becoming a failed state if nothing is done. A failed state is one that has lost both effectiveness and legitimacy. Moratorium on loans

Jun 30 (ST) It was a call from far-away Moneragala that woke me up this morning. On the line was Nana Mohideen, the jolly-mood trader and friend from Kussi Amma Sera’s extended network. “I say Sireee … no business no,” he said, in halting English. “What do you mean?” I asked. “Well after Easter Sunday incidents, few people coming to my shop. My debt rising, several bills to pay….…,” he said, inquiring whether there was a possibility of getting some relief from govt to delay the payment more..

WC 2019: Australia beat New Zealand

Jun 30 (CI) Big-game temperament, they said. On a decent run of form, with players coming back in who will strengthen them further. Know how to win a World Cup (or five). But after brushing aside the early pace-setters in this round-robin format, Australia look increasingly - and menacingly - close to their best once again. more..

Leadership crisis in Sri Lanka

Jun 30 (Island) These days the general comments one hears around in Colombo are that the Easter Sunday killings and destruction have impacted badly on the quality of our leadership, on our intelligence services even as much as it did on the ISIS bombers. The leaders are strutting around as if they were a law unto themselves unaccountable to none, more..

An ode to an Olivetti

Jun 30 (Island) A lower-middle-class household in the 1980s offered only the most basic, tactile, physical pursuits for a child, bounded by the garden or at the furthest, the start of a private lane leading to my house. I wasn’t adventurous and, in any case, after July 1983, a neighbourhood marked by charred remains of brick, mortar and Tamil lives wasn’t one parents sent their children to wander around in. I spent my time with books, inherited from my sister. And then, I discovered more..
