169,522 persons vaccinated against Covid-19
Dec 31 (FT) COVID-19 vaccines were administered to 169,522 on Tuesday and 64.36% of the country’s population has received the first two vaccine doses to date. The first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine has been administered to 74.37% of the population. 15,989,319 persons have received the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and 13,840,279 persons have received the 2nd dose as well. 563 persons test positive for Covid-19
Dec 31 (FT) SL’s COVID-19 case count rose to 586,746 with the detection of 563 COVID-19 patients yesterday. The patients detected yesterday include 561 persons from the New Year cluster and two overseas arrivals. 6,224 PCR tests were conducted yesterday. On Wednesday, 419 COVID-19 patients were detected. Of this, 417 persons were from the New Year cluster and two were SL overseas arrivals. 9,797 PCR tests and 5,509 rapid antigen tests were conducted on Wednesday.

Uzbek women trafficked to Sri Lanka for sex
Dec 31 (DM) Women from Uzbekistan are being trafficked to Sri Lanka for sex after being promised employment at hotels or as childcare workers. IRD records around Rs.70 m in VAT defaults
Dec 31 (ST) Sri Lanka’s Inland Revenue Department (IRD) has incurred a revenue loss of around Rs. 70 million last year, due to Value Added Tax (VAT) defaults involving Ceylon Fertilizer Company and seven other private institutions, the Auditor General Department’s recent report revealed. The IRD removed nearly 54,000 businesses from the books from VAT payments earlier this month, following the VAT rate revision to 8% from a previous 15%, with effect from December 2019.
