Eastern Province Karate-do Association holds election despite injunction order
May 13 (ST) An aggrieved party of 13 affiliates of the Eastern Province Karate-do Association (EPKA), had made a complaint against its regional body for conducting its election despite an injunction order issued by the Colombo District Court. 25,000 soldiers leave the Army in past 5 years
May 13 (TM) Approximately 25,000 soldiers have left the service of the Sri Lanka Army without having reported for duty in the past five years. Major General Rasika Kumara said: “In the past five years, about 25,000 soldiers have left the service without reporting for duty.” Maj. Gen. India-SL ferry service delayed till May 17

CEJ to take legal action over degazetting of Vidataltivu
May 13 (FT) Center for Environmental Justice (CEJ) Chairman Ravindranath Dabare said the organisation will take legal action against the Govt’s move to degazette a section of the Vidataltivu Nature Reserve. According to Dabare, as an initial step the CEJ has filed a Right to Information (RTI) request to the Ministry of Wildlife and Forest Resources Conservation. Rapid decline in birthrate; having kids has not become priority of new generation
May 13 (DM) The birth rate in Sri Lanka is on a rapid decline, and currently it has decreased by 30%, Kalubowila Teaching Hospital gynecologist Prof. Ajith Fernando said. The doctor said that the number of births, which was about 360,000, has decreased to about 240,000. May 13 (FT) An extraordinary gazette has been issued de-gazetting a section of the Vidataltivu Nature Reserve to set up an aquaculture industrial park. The gazette issued by Minister of Wildlife and Forest Resources Conservation Pavithradevi Wanniarachchi, noted that the area specified in the appendix of the gazette will no longer be designated as part of the Vidataltivu Nature Reserve. However, the appendix of the gazette notification has not been made available to the public.

Sobitha Thera claims 10 dual citizen MPs in Parliament

SC concludes hearing petitions against Sri Lanka Electricity Bill

Climate change to cause 1.2% annual loss of Sri Lanka’s GDP by 2050: Ruwan
May 13 (DM) The cost of climate change will account for a 1.2% loss of the annual GDP of SL by 2050 according to estimates by the World Bank, Senior Presidential Advisor Ruwan Wijewardene said.
