Crimes against women and children on the rise |
Aug 28 (DM) As a senior citizen of this country I am alarmed at the statistics revealed by the Police Department that claim 900 rape cases within six months of this year, out of which 700 are of children. Statements made by the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) and certain other authorities give the impression that this problem is difficult to resolve or diverse. Govt agencies are “passing the buck” from one to the other. I wish to state that there was a period when

Competency needed for policy management |
Aug 29 (NS) Higher education in Sri Lanka is in crisis - and that is an understatement. The Z-score fiasco continues. Question papers at the recent Advanced Level examination were riddled with errors. University academics are on strike. To cap it all, all universities - barring medical faculties - were closed this week. We need to ask why education has reached this sorry state. Along with free healthcare, free education has been a luxury Sri Lankans have taken for granted.

A-Z of Sri Lankan English: U is for up |
Aug 29 (GV) The verb cope up is one which divides opinion: is it acceptable Sri Lankan English, or simply an error? It is certainly commonly used in SLE (“He’s finding it hard to cope up”), but it is also true to say that it is a signal that the speaker is not necessarily adhering to recognised international standards. In standard usage, cope is used without the particle up: “He’s finding it hard to cope”, “How is she coping with the pressure?” The same applies to the verb bear up: “She couldn’t bear up the pain”.
