CA dismissal of writ petition challenging AG’s withdrawal of indictment against...
Nov 21 (CT) This refers to the above headed report in the Daily Mirror of 11th Nov 2021. The Court of Appeal ruled that the Court would not interfere with the AG’s Prosecutorial Power. I wish to express my views as citizen and not of a legal kind, as follows: 1. The Judiciary is the Custodian of peoples’ Rights. The Court adjudicates disputes between subject and subject and between subject and the State. 2. The AG has already exercised his Prosecutorial Power and indicted the accused.

A dismal report card
Nov 21 (ST) My dear Gota maama, I am writing to you this week to congratulate you on completing two years in the highest office in the land – and probably the toughest job in the country. Many people are complaining, but you shouldn’t be. This is what you wanted to do because you wanted to usher in vistas of splendour for us! When you first said that you were interested in the top job, many thought that this was only because Mahinda maama was barred from contesting again by the Constitution.

Forex shortage ‘fuel’ling panic
Nov 21 (TM) Govt remains steadfast that it can ensure a continued supply of fuel, despite growing concerns that the foreign exchange crisis will lead to a shortage at the pump. This comes as two credit facilities, sought from Oman and India to sustain fuel and energy supply, progress at a snail’s pace. Both the $ 3.6 billion line of credit (LoC) sought from Oman, and the other $ 500 million LoC from India, are progressing slowly.

A stark warning

This is the culmination of the highly successful vaccination program, which is well on its way to achieve herd immunity that comes when around 80 percent of the population is inoculated. Booster shot will eventually be given to everyone while the regular vaccination program will target everyone above 12.

Should SL engage a LNG floating regassification vessel for electric power?
Nov 21 (Island) Offshore installations such as FSRUs are regulated by various authorities who have jurisdiction over them. These are subjected to regulation and standardization by the coastal state GOSL, flag state, class, international and national standardization bodies and maritime regulators such as IMO, MARPOL, SOLAS and their regional directives. In view of the floating nature of the FSRU there are several parties involved, whose relationships should be clearly understood.

The current state of play
Nov 21 (Island) A legend in his time, Galle’s W. Dahanayake who was briefly prime minister after the SWRD Bandaranaike assassination, attributed his unexpected elevation to the prime ministry to fortuitous circumstances. Former Prez Maithripala Sirisena, although he has not chosen to do so to date, can also say that his unexpected ascendancy to the presidential throne in 2015 was the result of similar good fortune. Sirisena, unlike Dahanayake, certainly aspired to the prime ministry

SL out to extend WI winless record here
Nov 21 (ST) For West Indies, SL is unclaimed territory. Ever since they first set foot in the island in 1993 for Test cricket, they have played 11 matches but not once broken the curse, not even when the great Brian Lara plundered 688 runs off three games in 2001 or when Chris Gayle lit up the Galle track with a marathon 333 in 2010. SL have won seven games and drawn the rest. Such has been SL’s dominance against WI at home.

WI look to open their Test account in SL
Nov 21 (CI) Chris Gayle made a triple-hundred in Galle, Brian Lara hit 351 runs in one match in Colombo, and 688 in that 3-match series, but this has to be one of cricket's more surprising facts: WI have never won a Test in SL. Partly this is down to their not having played on the island in their roaring 1980s - SL too weak to attract them then perhaps, and too volatile geopolitically to have had a consistent touring schedule anyway. But still, since 1993, these teams have met 11 times in SL;
