105 elephant deaths this year |
Sep 30 (CT) As many as 105 elephants had died in the country due to various reasons in the first seven months of this year, records of the Wildlife Conservation Department show. In the previous year, the figure stood at 224. During the same period, 21 people had been killed in elephant attacks, the department said. The highest number of elephant deaths had been reported from northwestern wildlife range, and 60 of the deaths were due to gunshot wounds.

Foreigners own 10,000 acres of land in Sri Lanka |
Sep 30 (CT) Foreign nationals who are not citizens of Sri Lanka had bought around 10,000 acres of land in the past two decades, including private land close to the historic Dutch Fort in Galle, said Land Minister Jeevan Kumaratunga. They had taken ownership of the land in violation of laws and without paying the taxes due to the state, he said. The large scale purchasing of land in main towns by foreigners poses a serious threat to national security, said the minister.

None of us wants to be blown up in a suicide attack, but neither would we care to be incarcerated for months on end on mere suspicion of involvement in such a crime or even just sympathy for a terrorist’s cause. Sep 30 (LP) The last “Tapir” at the Dehiwala Zoo had an unfortunate death. Tapir is a large browsing mammal, roughly pig-like in shape, with a short, prehensile snout. According to the Performance Report 2008 of the Ports and Aviation Ministry, the total cargo tonnage handled at the Colombo Port during 2008 was 30,923,831 tons (including containerised cargo), an increase of 6.7 percent compared to 28,984,807 tons of total cargo tonnage handled in 2007.

Sep 30 (DN) Police arrested yesterday five suspects in connection with a double murder in Kondavil, Jaffna on July 28. The jewelleries robbed from the victims were recovered from the suspects.
