Lankan pop star in Bahrain debut |
Sep 30 (GDN) A Sri Lankan pop star is to debut in Bahrain during two shows next weekend. A E Manoharan, popularly known as Suranganee, will headline the Dream Stars Night show, being held on October 8 at the Delmon International Hotel's poolside, Manama. The singer will head the bill that will also see Sri Lankan film actors and playback singers Channa Perera, K Sujeewa, Pushpakumara Mahanama and Bahrain-based Sri Lankan band Millennium take the stage.

UNHCR concerned about safety of displaced persons in Sri Lanka |
Sep 30 (UNCHR) The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) is deeply concerned about reports of security incidents taking place inside camps accommodating IDPs in northern Sri Lanka. The most recent incident took place on Saturday, September 26th in the Menik Farm camp, in the district of Vavuniya, when security forces reportedly attempted to stop a group of IDPs from moving between two zones of the camp. This angered the IDPs who subsequently attacked the sentries.

Govt. uses Israel to soften American pressure |
Sep 30 (DM) The report on Sri Lanka’s (SL) war that was to be forwarded to the US Congress has been postponed indefinitely . According to sources in America , this postponement is engendered by the need to garner more information in connection with the report . However , some sources say ,this is the result of a successful ‘Diplomatic operation’ of SL. It is Israel which is being employed to execute this operation.

Maj. Gen. Perera sues Rupavahini for Rs. 75 M |
Sep 30 (DM) Giving evidence yesterday in an action against the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation, Major General Wasantha Perera denied the alleged defamatory allegation by former JVP Propaganda Secretary, Wimal Weerawansa that he had betrayed the army and withdrawn from the Kanakarayankulam camp during the war in 1999. Indian pilot murdered in Negombo |
Sep 30 (DM) The mutilated body of a 50-year-old Indian pilot attached to SriLankan Airlines was found brutally murdered and hanging from the staircase of his house in Negombo last morning. Police Spokesman Senior DIG Nimal Mediwake said a neighbour had seen the body through a window and called the police who had broken open the door and entered the house. Police had found bloodstains and a knife on the floor. But the body had been hanging from the staircase.

Jaffna Mayor not sworn in yet |

Some users are reporting that everyone seems to have gone to Vidyartha College rather than the Harvard, MIT or UC that their entries normally show. UNHCR sanctions $5 mn for de-mining in North Lanka |
Sep 30 (IE) Sri Lanka has been pledged USD 5 million by the UN refugee agency to speed up de-mining operations in the North to pave the way for faster resettlement of displaced Tamils. The money from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) would be utilised by the government to procure de-mining equipment to clear Wanni region, which used to be a stronghold of the LTTE. Ten flailing machines that trigger off the mines are being bought.

Sri Lankan safe bottle lamp project, a finalist in BBC World Challenge |

This year, another entry from Sri Lanka, the ‘Safe Bottle Lamp Project’ is one of the 12 finalists in ‘The World Challenge - 09’ contest run by BBC, Newsweek and Shell. Inflation slows, making room for rate cut |
Sep 30 (BN) Sri Lanka’s inflation slowed to the weakest pace in at least five years in September, giving the central bank room to continue cutting interest rates to support the island’s economic recovery. Consumer prices in Colombo, rose 0.7 percent from a year earlier after gaining 0.9 percent in August, the statistics agency said on its Web site today. The median forecast in a Bloomberg survey of nine economists was for a 1.2 percent increase.
