Sri Lanka: Time to take spice route |
July 30 (FPJ) Last week, I visited the beautiful home of local businessman Thirukumar Nadesan in a part of Colombo-7 that is so reminiscent of Kolkata’s Alipore of yore. There are three facets of Nadesan that strike me as significant. First, he is a Jaffna Tamil now living in Colombo; second, he is an extremely devout Hindu, with a fully functioning puja room and even a goshala in his back garden; and finally, his wife Nirupama, a MP for the ruling SLFP, is a niece of President Rajapaksa.

Walking Path: A play without words |
July 31 (GV) A play without words is a risky proposition. Why would a theatrical production abandon one of the most powerful tools at its disposal? In a performative audio-visual medium like theatre words can and do carry much weight. Much of theatre is carried by words – sometimes at the expense of the theatrical. The no-words choice in “Walking Path” appears to relate to the play’s thematic concerns at a number of levels. At one level it seems to be about silence:

EPRLF and the secular national front |
July 31 (NS) A fact, largely unappreciated in Sri Lanka’s post-war political discourse, is the attempt made by the Tamil polity to reach out to the Sinhalese. It could be because the latter expect the Tamils to reach out, as the defeated reach out to the victorious; or, because believing in the prominent place that should be afforded to their language and religion, the former expects the latter to reach out, as an ever grateful child reaches out to a benevolent father.
